The
Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem received
the Jeanne Williams Fund Development Award at
the Shepherd's Centers of America national conference
in October 2004, according to Sam Matthews,
Executive Director. The award was in recognition
of the outstanding accomplishments of the 2004
Annual Used Book Sale fundraising event. The
event raised $32,000 for the programs and services
of the ministry.
The
Faith In Action Care Program of the Shepherd's
Center also received the Outstanding Program
Award at the Shepherd's Centers of America national
conference in Kansas City in October 2003.
The
Faith In Action Care Program of the Shepherd's
Center provides visitation and respite care
services for homebound older adults as well
as minor home repair services and medically-related
transportation for older adults in the community.
The services are offered at no cost, except
for repair materials, to anyone age 50 and over.
In
June 2003, the Shepherd's Center assumed responsibility
for many of the services offered for older adults
by Winston-Salem Churches in Ministry (WSCIM)
which terminated services at the end of May.
At the same time the Shepherd's Center was approached
by Serving Our Savior (SOS) to explore merging
their operations into the Faith In Action Care
Program. Beginning June 1, the Shepherd's Center
assumed the transportation services previously
provided by WSCIM and SOS and also assumed the
minor home repair operations of SOS.
Requests
for services through the Faith In Action Care
Program more than doubled during 2003 and 2004.
In the last two years, requests for services
have grown significantly.
The
Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem is
an interfaith ministry whose mission is to support
and promote successful aging through educational,
service, volunteer and support programs for
older adults. The ministry was founded in 1985
and has provided services to thousands of older
adults since its inception.
